Dear Midnapore Families,

It was great to have everybody back in the building.  Spring break was an opportunity for all of us to connect with friends and family, but we are now excited to jump back into learning.  We have many exciting activities and learning opportunities planned for the final stretch of the season.  Please be aware that there is a solar eclipse on Monday and that we are taking safety precautions to ensure the well-being of all.  We will have an indoor lunch, and it is recommended nobody is outside between 11:30pm - 2:00pm. If your child walks home for lunch, we would like to welcome you to stay for the entire day. If you choose to stay, please pack your child a lunch and let your child’s homeroom teacher know.

Literacy Month

We have so many fun-filled activities planned for our Literacy Month this year! The goal is to help our students create positive associations with reading, and carry some of these habits forward so students are engaging in reading even throughout the summer! We have posted a calendar on our Instagram page @midnaporeschool. It will also be posted to our website and shared with our students next week.

For this week, the activities are:

April 8 – Word Scramble Contest – Classrooms will all hear the same “mystery word” in the morning. They have to come up with as many words as they can using only the letters in the word. The class with the most words wins!

April 9 – Word Rhyme Contest - Classrooms will all hear the same “mystery word” in the morning. They have to come up with as many rhyming words as they can. The class with the most words wins!

April 10 – Bring a stuffy to cuddle up and read with. Nothing like a cozy reading session!

April 11 – Game Show Reading day – Students will be playing a game of jeopardy to test their literacy skills!

April 12 – Wear your softest PJs to really get cozy while reading. Teachers will play some smooth jazz music to really make students feel comfy and relaxed.

Mandarin Update

This week in Ms. Fan's Grade 1 class, we had lots of fun learning
about nouns, verbs and naming parts of a sentence. We learned ways to make "juicy" sentences in English. Everyone worked together to brainstorm
a list of nouns that could be in our imaginary “noun town". Our town grew
with every idea, such as “Calgary tower, a dinosaur theme park, and even flying whales”. Then we talked about “adventure verbs” and came up with creative sentences of things that we can do in our noun town.

In Mandarin class, we learned a wonderful song called "Where is Spring?" and we read a poem about Spring called “Chun Xiao”. We also had a great time in science, looking at different objects with wheels and trying out ways to move them. We discovered ways to make them go fast, slow and
even change direction.

Next week, we're going to have chicken eggs in our class! We're really excited to watch them hatch and learn about them all month long.

Kindergarten Registrations – Please check you School Engage Account

Thank you to our kindergarten families who have already registered for the 2024-25 school year. Early registration allows us to thoughtfully plan forward for staffing. If you have registered for kindergarten, please check your School Engage account to see if additional information is required for registration purposes. We will process registrations when we have received all required information and documents.

Literacy Fact of the Week

Children’s academic successes at ages 9 and 10 can be attributed to the amount of talk they hear from birth through age 3. Young children who are exposed to certain early language and literacy experiences also prove to be good readers later on in life. Ask your children to narrate what they see as you drive or walk to school! Play a game of “I spy” and look for words that start with specific letter sounds.
