Dear Midnapore Families,

Please take some time to read some important updates during this busy time at Midnapore School

Illness Reporting

If your child is experiencing a fever, cough, vomiting, or respiratory concerns, please keep them home until their symptoms have cleared for 24 hours.  Based on this high level of student illnesses we will be contacting parents if we experience these symptoms in your child to prevent the spread. We have connected with AHS regarding our high volume of illness and will be working with CDC on further recommendations.

Dogs on School Property

We have had several families phone in regarding dogs on the property and frustrations from our parent community.  We have been in touch with the city Bylaw officers who will be supporting our community.  We remind parents that there are to be no dogs on school property at any point.  We recommend that parents with dogs walk their child to the sidewalk and allow their child to walk to the door alone.  Parents are able to view their child enter the school from the playground sidewalk, which is not on school property.

Picture Retake Day

Please note, Midnapore School’s picture retake day is Wednesday, December 10.  If you would like your child to do picture retakes, please bring your package back and we will happily support you.

CNY Update

At this time, we would like to share an update on our Mandarin Program New Year’s celebration. After consulting with our partner schools, we have made the decision to refocus our efforts on ensuring teaching and learning remain our top priority, especially given the number of instructional days that have been lost.

Moving forward, we will rotate our evening New Year’s celebration between the North and South schools. As a result, there will not be an evening New Year’s celebration at Panabaker School this year.

We are excited to share, however, that we will be hosting an in-school New Year’s celebration at Midnapore School in late February. We will provide more information in the New Year about our plans so that parents can attend and take part in this important celebration.

Winter Concert- Midnapore goes to the Movies

We are excited to share that we will be hosting our Winter Concert celebration for families on Thursday, December 18. To ensure we follow fire code regulations and maintain safe capacity in the gym, we will be offering two showtimes

  • Students with last names A–M: 9:45–10:45 a.m.
    Students with last names N–Z: 1:15–2:15 p.m.

The students have been working hard to prepare for our “Midnapore Goes to the Movies” event. Both performances will be the same, so families only need to attend the show that corresponds with their child’s last name.

In the spirit of giving, we are also inviting families to bring a non-perishable food item or any donation they feel comfortable contributing. These items will go directly toward supporting Midnapore families in need during this holiday season.

Kindergarten attendance: All Kindergarten families are invited to attend the first show. (They will not be performing in the second show).  If this is not a regular Kindergarten Day for you, we ask that you take your child with you at the end of the morning show.

Our parent council has generously donated Kernels for all students in our school on the final day of school.

We look forward to sharing this celebration with you!

If you are a family in need over the holidays, please email me at gdbennett@cbe.ab.ca and we will do our best to support as many families as we can.

Choir Members – Practice Slides and Hitmen Game Purchase Link!

Our choir members have been working hard on some beautiful harmonies for the upcoming winter concert! Since our noon hour practice time is so short, it would be very helpful for them to practice their parts at home. In addition to the lyrics and QR code sheet sent home, practice slides can be accessed by clicking here.

Choir students are very excited about the opportunity to sing the national anthem at a Calgary Hitmen game on Family Day – February, 16! Being outside of school hours, it is not an official school field trip and families are required to purchase tickets to the game through a designated purchase link (we will have a section reserved for our school group to sit together). This experience is optional. If your choir member is attending our “Hitmen Anthem Experience,” please use this link to purchase tickets before Friday, December 19: www.HitmenGroups.com/MidnaporeSchool

Energy Club

We are excited to share that we will be opening our Energy club back open to students who would benefit from increased activity first thing in the morning.  We ask only students who are willing to participate in the activity show for this club as we have limited supervision.  Students must be at the front doors for 7:30am and late students will be turned away as we don’t have the ability to monitor the doors and hallways.  We will begin Energy club on Monday, January 12 and will continue with this program until the end of the year.  The energy club will be all five days of the week.

Open House

We are excited to share that Midnapore School’s Open house date for new families will be Wednesday, January 7 at 6:00pm. This Open house is for families interested in attending our Mandarin Language Program for grades K-4.  We will have our Kindergarten Open house for new families in the Spring.  Please view the link below for more information.

Our Mandarin Bilingual Grade 1 students continue to build strong foundations in both English and Mandarin through integrated literacy and oral language routines. This week, students practiced phonics, short-vowel reading and writing, and engaged in Mandarin vocabulary, sentence-building, and guided conversations to introduce their family members using key sentence frames. In math, students focused on sorting pattern blocks, learning to identify their attributes, and establishing their own sorting rules.
